Chapter Twenty-One

Aderyn watched their route carefully, memorizing it although she didn’t know why they’d need to find their way back to the Blue Tern in a hurry. More likely they’d be running for the gate if it came to fleeing for their lives. Aside from the blue-banded lampposts, the streets looked exactly as they did everywhere else in Obsidian. This struck her as absurd. Drop someone down anywhere in Obsidian and they would only be able to tell their location from the colored bands, not from unique architectural differences or smells or the number of people on the street.

Though there did seem to be more people than usual out and about, probably because it was dinnertime. Aderyn’s stomach grumbled at the delicious smells wafting from every third doorway. Taverns, inns, or private homes, all of them advertised their cooking skills. It made the Blue Tern’s humble offerings seem even less appetizing.

The Staffsworn led the way through narrow streets that grew wider as they approached what Aderyn assumed was the center of Blue district. Like Red and White districts, the houses here were taller and broader, with grassy lawns or hedges or rows of small trees dividing the properties. But there were differences, Aderyn noticed as she scanned the buildings and the streets looking for an escape route if that became necessary. None of them were as large as the mansions in White district, for one, and Liander’s giant monstrosity of a house would have swallowed two of Blue district’s largest buildings with room for stables and outbuildings for dessert. They were also plainer, without the elaborate carved eaves or fluted pillars of Red district or the marble facing most of White district boasted.

She looked up at the eaves of one of the mansions. An abandoned bird’s nest perched at the corner where two rain gutters met. That couldn’t be a smart place for a bird to build a nest, not with how rainy Obsidian was. It might be the reason the nest was abandoned. Just then, it seemed like an omen: their team was square at the intersection between Gray and Blue factions, with a deluge pouring toward them from both directions. Too bad fleeing wasn’t an option.

Owen walked in front of her, looking fearless and unconcerned. She hoped he had a plan that would get them all out safely. At the moment, Aderyn felt as pessimistic as Livia: Liander was powerful, and whatever evidence he’d manufactured would be compelling. And Blue faction didn’t care anything about them to defend them against Gray faction, who would want them dead. Maybe the Staffsworn and his gang were more important than Aderyn thought, if their presence would keep the Gray partisans off her team’s backs. Aderyn considered this and then discarded the notion as improbable.

Eventually, the Staffsworn left the street for a path leading up to the front door of a mansion no different from the others. But he didn’t walk to the front door. Instead, he followed a branch of the
